Samuel “Tommy” Bennett, 64 of the Greenvine Community, Burton, Texas, passed away Sunday, February 6, 2005 at his home.
Tommy was born January 13,1941 in Houston, Texas to Samuel Reese Bennett and Eugenia Honea Bennett. He served in the Texas National Guard and was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener. A 1959 graduate of Stephen F. Austin High School in Houston, Tommy began his career in the newspaper business shortly thereafter. Tommy married Patricia Crosby in July 1968.
Tommy was hired by the Houston Chronicle in June 1960 as a pressroom “flyboy”. He worked his way through a 6 year apprenticeship program and became a journeyman pressman in November 1968. Tommy worked his way up through ranks and was then promoted into management in 1983 where he then became a supervisor in the pressroom. At the time of his retirement, Tommy had served the Houston Chronicle with 42 years of dedicated service retiring in 2002 in the position of Pressroom Scheduling Manager.
Tommy’s ultimate goal was to move to the country whereby he built his retirement home with Patricia in the small community of Greenvine, just outside of Burton, Texas. Tommy and his younger brother Raymond began raising Brangus cattle and farming. Other interests in his life were saltwater fishing and fresh water fishing as well as deer hunting and gardening. He was “Pop” to his six grandchildren and enjoyed their presence whenever they arrived at the “farm”.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his wife Patricia “Pat” Bennett of Greenvine Community; mother Eugenia Bennett of Greenvine Community; son Jeff Bennett and wife Brandy of Huffman, Texas; daughter Lisa Jenkins and husband John of Conroe, Texas; grandchildren Alexandra Elizabeth Bennett, Colton Walker Bennett, Abby Michelle Bennett, Hannah Elizabeth Jenkins, Madison Grace Jenkins, John Mason Jenkins; brother Raymond Reese Bennett and wife Joanne of Greenvine Community; sisters Jeannie Daniels of Buffalo Creek, Colorado, Cassandra Chaffee and husband Jim of Federal Way, Washington, Susan Anderson and husband Raymond of Giddings, Texas; brother-in-law Tommy Crosby and wife Nosi of Cloudcroft, New Mexico; sister-in-law Kathy Healey of Houston, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 9, 2005 in Brenham Memorial Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 10, 2005 at Greenvine Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Gregory officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Dan West, Larry Allison, Carl Jurca, Don Turbeville, Jimmy Grudziecke and Ron Duncan.
Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society, Greenvine Baptist Church or Hospice.
