Obituary

Susan Albert Hazelwood, age 64, died peacefully in her home in Brenham, Texas after a courageous battle with cancer.

Sue was born on February 11, 1957 in Sandusky, Ohio. She graduated Sandusky Highschool and Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute. Sue and her late first husband, Mike Hawkins, moved to Texas in 1975 to follow their passion for working with horses. Sue worked for various ranches in the Brenham area. She and her late second husband, John West, spent their time on music, photography, and raising her two daughters, Erin and Kelly Hawkins. At the time of her death, Sue was happily married to Bruce Hazelwood, who was her partner in life for over a decade. One of Sue’s greatest pleasures was working side by side with her husband Bruce in some of their many projects. She assisted with his career of raising and showing longhorn cattle, as they custom built their dream log cabin together in Burton, Texas.

Sue was a very talented musician and photographer. However, her biggest talent was in making everyone’s day a little brighter. She was always the easy-going friend who you could call with a problem, the family member who would have a cool head in a crisis, and the unendingly supportive mother who sang God’s praises even through her toughest times.

Sue is survived by her husband Bruce Hazelwood, two children of her own, Erin O’Neal and Kelly Han, two children by marriage, Zach Hazelwood and Callie Hazelwood, and 6 grandchildren.

We will gather to honor Sue at Prairie Lea Cemetery on Monday, November 22 at 10 am, with a graveside service starting at 11. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Hospice Brazos Valley or Brenham Pregnancy Center.”
