Obituary

Tanya Schmid Golibart McClendon, age 86, of Brenham, Texas, died October 24, 2018, at home surrounded by family.

She was a fourth generation “Brenhamite”. Her ancestors were of the first Swiss, German, and Czech settlers in Washington County. She was born July 11, 1932.

Tanya was educated in Brenham’s Central School, where she was chosen to receive the American Legion Award, and Brenham High School where she received many honors. She was a member of FHA, Latin Club, band for five years, majorette for three years, and a drum major her senior year.

She attended Blinn Junior College and The University of Houston, earning her B.S. degree in Health, Physical Education and Elementary Education. She was also feature twirler with the University of Houston Cougar Band for two years, and ROTC Sweetheart of 1950 and 1951.

In 1952, Tanya married her soulmate, Bill Golibart. Bill was a graduate of Rice Institute, and an All-Southwest Conference baseball catcher. Together they raised two daughters. They were involved in Bellaire and Magnolia where they began the Magnolia Sports Association.

Tanya was a former school teacher, the first Education Director of the Brenham Heritage Museum, and a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild, E.C.W. and vestry. Tanya was a former member of the Fortnightly Club, president of the Daughters of the Confederacy, and she served on the board of directors of Brenham State School Volunteer Service Council. She also served on the Bluebonnet Hills Homeowners Association, Brenham Heritage Museum, and Washington County University of Houston Alumni Association.

She is survived by daughters, Tiana Golibart Covington, Leith Golibart Keller and husband Paul. The other loves of her life were her beloved granddaughters, Kinsey B. Butler and husband James, Kiley D. Corby, Kelsey B. Penkert, Bailey C. Patton, Torrey B. Rothleiner, Darrell Penkert; great grandchildren, Faith Carley Penkert, Arabella Hope Corby, Whitney Keene, Lincoln Andrew Franke and Olivia Noel Chapman; Joan Schmid Zeiss and Owen Zeiss, Rozainne Schmid Weiss, and many more nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She is reunited in Heaven with her parents, Joseph Ingersoll and Tracy (Hoffmann) Schmid; husband Bill Lee Golibart, father of her daughters, who passed in 1985; husband Dr. James L. McClendon who passed in 2013; great-granddaughter and special little angel, Liberty “Libby” Kathleen Corby; nephew Jodie Doyle Weiss; great-niece, Rachel Moore; and great-nephew, Travis Weiss.

A memorial service will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at 1:30 pm, on Friday, December 14, 2018. In accordance with Tanya’s wishes, an interment of her ashes will take place at Prairie Lea Cemetery.
