Obituary

Wallace Dahmann, 83, of the Independence Community, passed away on January 11, 2019.

Visitation with the family will be Wednesday, January 16, from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Brenham Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 17, at 2:00pm, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at William Penn. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Born July 29th, 1935 in William Penn to Hairston (Tom) Dahmann and Thekla Dahmann (née Horstmann), Wallace was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in William Penn where he was a lifelong parishioner and held multiple positions, including membership in the Bethlehem Lutheran Layman’s League.

On October 31st, 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, Gloria Goessler, at Saint Mathew’s Church in Sandy Hill. Their union produced three children—Doyle, Don, and Dee Ann—and lasted 39 years until Gloria’s death in 1993. On July 10th, 1999, he married Darleen Marie Perry in Gillespie County, Texas.
Wallace attended William Penn School and Brenham High School, where he excelled in football and track-and-field. His skill at the broad jump, discus throw, and as anchor on the relay teams propelled the Cubs to the 1952 and 1953 State Championship where they set a conference record in the 440-meter relay. Upon graduation in 1954, he was offered a scholarship to Rice University, which he declined in order to help his father in the carpentry business. Many of the homes and other structures that he built still dot the landscape around Washington County, as do the many co-workers and former students that he came to know in the 20 years he was a vocational shop teacher at Brenham Junior High.

He was preceded in death by his parents Hairston and Thekla, and wife Gloria Ann.

Wallace is survived by his wife Darleen Dahmann, sons and daughters-in-law Doyle and Karin Dahmann of Brenham, Don and Cheri Dahmann of Anchorage, Alaska, daughter Dee Dahmann and Cork Graham of Anchor Point, Alaska; grandson Justice McCord of Brenham, grandson and granddaughter-in-law Rollin and Angela Ogrodowicz of College Station, granddaughter Eedann McCord of Seattle, Washington; great-grandson Wallace Hamilton Ogrodowicz; five step-children; nine step-grandchildren including Abigail Kirby; and many beloved family, friends, and their children.

Humility and devotion to family were hallmarks of Wallace’s life. He was a loving father, grandfather, husband, athlete, teacher, farmer, rancher, sportsman, coach, and builder. With his many talents, Wallace gave of himself throughout his life, and to the family and friends that received these gifts, he will remain fondly remembered and beloved.

Pallbearers will be Justice McCord, Rollin Ogrodowicz, David Crowson, Daryl Dahman, Craig Kankel, Oscar Sommers, Landry Fuchs, and Jeff Sommers.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Eedann McCord, Wallace H. Ogrodowicz, Willie Kankel Jr. Fred Schwartz Jr. Landon Klussmann, and Wallace Klussmann.
