Obituary
Warren Alfred (Bro. Mac) McAlister was born July 14, 1922 and went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 18, 2005. He was 83.
Bro. Mac was born in Okonie, S.C. He grew up in and around the countryside of Greenville, S.C.
As a young man Bro. Mac joined the navy and spent his boot camp in Pensacola, FL. He was introduced to Texas on Christmas Day as he was assigned to parachute rigger training in Corpus Christi, ending up in Kingsville as a member of the 36th Fighter Squadron.
While stationed in Kingsville, Bro. Mac married his wife of 61 years, Joyce Slayton McAlister. After which time he spent time stationed in Washington State and San Diego, CA. before spending his final months in the South Pacific before being discharged.
Bro. Mac then enrolled at Texas A&I to get his basic college requirements and graduated from UCC Baptist school in Corpus Christi. Bro. Mac then attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth.
While attending Texas A&I & UCC Baptist School, Bro. Mac was called by Rivera Baptist Church where he spent 5 years pastoring.
While attending the seminary Bro. Mac pastored 2 years at Garrets Bluff in West, Texas, traveling some 500 miles each week to pastor. He then ended up somewhat closer to seminary at Missionary Baptist Church.
After graduating from the seminary, the Antioch Church at Sand Flat in Tyler called him to preach. He then spent time in Edom and Turnertown.
Bro. Mac was called by Temple Baptist Church in Clute, TX to serve as pastor in 1963 where he spent the next 10 years. After which time he worked for Cardinal Construction and S&M Construction as safety director and foreman, before retiring.
Bro. Mac was called out of retirement and back to Turnertown Baptist Church where he spent 6 years before moving to Brenham, TX and serving as Associate Pastor for the Fellowship Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Warren Andrews McAlister and Etta Singleton McAlister, sisters Elsie Turner and Mae Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joyce S. McAlister. His son Terry M. McAlister and wife Terry of Clute, TX; his daughter Merre Allison McAlister and fiancé Chass Labinski both of Austin, TX; grandchildren Casey McAlister of Waco, TX, Trace McAlister of Murfreesborg, TN, Ashley Allison LaBaur and husband Jesse of Austin and Christopher Warren McAlister of Austin. He is also survived by his sister Joyce Brezeale of Piedmont, S.C.; brothers Clint McAlister of Pelzar, S.C., Robert McAlister and wife Tess of Greenville, S.C., Kenneth McAlister and wife Jeanette of Rocky Mount, N.C., Jack McAlister and wife JoAnne of Canterville, GA; brother-in-law Bill Butler and sister-in-law Elizabeth Slayton both of Brenham; numerous nieces and nephews and literally thousands of friends.
In Bro. Mac’s 83 years upon this earth, he never met a stranger. He was an admired and highly thought of pastor. A well respected boss. An avid and skillful outdoorsman. A true friend. A loving grandfather. He was a loving father and a loving and devoted husband. But above all he was Bro. Mac “God’s Loyal Servant”.
Visitation with the McAlister family will be from 6 – 8 p.m., Thursday, October 20 at Brenham Memorial Chapel.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 21 at the Fellowship Baptist Church with Brother Darren Donaldson officiating. Burial will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery.
