Obituary
Willie Hayne “Cooney” Shiflett went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, August 28, 2009.
Cooney was born July 8, 1923 to George and Nola Shiflett in Weldon, Texas. He attended school in Weldon, Texas. He went to CC camp at the age of 16 and served in the United States Army during World War II. After returning from the service, he worked for Dow Chemical Company for a short time. In 1945 he began his life long career in the pipeline industry. In 2007, the industry honored him by inducting him into the Pipeliners Hall of Fame.
Cooney was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Shriners for 60 years.
Cooney and Betty Sue Monk married on November 8, 1980. They traveled throughout Texas pipelining and in 1990 retired to Brenham, Texas.
Cooney loved the Lord, his family and friends deeply. He was a very loving husband and father and truly a one of a kind man. He will forever be missed by all.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, two brothers, four sisters and daughter Loy Ann Shiflett Zapalac.
Survivors include: his wife, Betty Sue; sons, Tommy Shiflett and wife Marilyn of Beaumont, Texas, Harlow “Chip” Monk and wife Janine of Houston, Texas; daughters, Glenda Hahn and husband Robert of Brenham, Texas, Rose Shiflett of Palm Harbor, Florida, Elizabeth Moeller and husband Ron of Tarpon Springs, Florida; grandsons, Brandon Shiflett, Tommy Lee Shiflett and wife Brandi, Jarrod Shiflett and wife Angela, Nils Shiflett, Dustin Lombardi, Harlow Monk, Chad Monk, Chris Monk, Jeffery Merz and Jason Hahn and wife Melissa; granddaughters, Tammy Tallent and husband Steve, Kelly Howell and husband James, Kristin Hahn, Kari Goerlitz and husband Roger, Courtney Benson and husband Brandon, Shelley Armstrong and husband Larry, Madison Moeller, Marty Schiller and husband Tracy, Marcy Zapalac, Ashley Briones and husband Jesus, Tracey Merz; sisters, Ella Mae Tolbert of League City, Texas and Naomi Coulter of Houston, Texas and many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the Shiflett family will be Sunday, August 30th from 3-5 p.m. in Brenham Memorial Chapel.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 31st at 4 p.m. at Brenham Memorial Chapel with Rev. Larry Embry officiating. Interment will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery. Graveside Masonic Rites will be conducted by Graham Lodge #20 A.F. & A.M.
His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
