Obituary

Billie Scoggin Moorman went to be with the Lord on February 25, 2023, in Brenham, Texas.

She was born on February 24, 1927, in Indian Creek, Texas, to Sheba Jo and George Lawson Scoggin. She was a graduate of Richland Springs High School and was on the softball team and Draughons Business College, a private business school. She worked for the Veterans Administration in Lubbock, Texas, where she met George R. Moorman. They were married on November 17, 1946 in Lubbock.

George picked November 17 for the wedding date since it was also his birthday. He figured he would never forget their anniversary if the date was the same as his birthday.

They lived in Lubbock and then Waco, going through the terrible tornado that destroyed much of Waco’s downtown and ended the lives of many people, including their neighbors. While in Waco, they had two children, Hal and Rob.

Because George wanted to go into private law practice, they moved to Brenham in 1954. They were attracted by the beauty of Washington County.

They bought the BoPeep Shop from BoPeep Fischer and, for the first time, Billie became an independent business woman. Through the years she changed the store to ultimately become a very popular women’s sportswear store that she ran for several decades.

After George retired, they moved to Horseshoe Bay, Texas, for several years and then to Sun City in Georgetown. They were among the founders of The Worship Place, a church in Sun City. They moved back to Brenham to Kruse Village, where they spent the rest of their lives. The family is very grateful for the wonderful care that Billie and George received at Kruse.

People often referred to Billie as the life of the party. She always had an upbeat attitude. The nurses at Kruse told her family that she had a smile that could light up a room.

When she was born, Billie’s birth certificate named her “Ninth child, female.” Two of her siblings died during infancy.

Her parents raised sheep but had milk cows, chickens and pigs. Billie grew up helping with the chores.

Billie was the last survivor of her siblings. Although she was named Gladys Lee, she was called Billie or Billie Punk. After she and George married, he legally changed her name to Billie.

She is survived by her two sons, Robert L. Moorman and R. Hal Moorman; daughters-in-law Becky Moorman and Lucy Moorman; nine grandchildren, Ted, Lydia, Jason, Peter, Ben, Kate, Will, Bethany and John; and six great-grandchildren, Evelynn, Della, Henry, Stella, Grant and Julian.

Billie and George were great parents, raising their sons in the nurture and admonition of the Lord and providing a great example of a Christian marriage.

Visitation will be held at Brenham Memorial Chapel, 2300 Stringer St., from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 6.

Memorial Services will be at Brenham’s First Baptist Church, 2715 S. Market St., on March 7 at 11 a.m.

Memorials may be made to the Brenham Pregnancy Center.
