Obituary

Edwin “Eddie” Hugo, Jr. passed away peacefully on July 15, 2022 in Brenham, Texas.

Eddie was born October 25, 1949 in Houston, TX to Edwin Hugo, Sr. and Geneva Rau Hugo. Soon after he was born, they moved to Brenham, TX where he grew up and attended Brenham schools and graduated from Brenham High School in 1968. During his high school years, he started his career in the meat business, quickly advancing from beginner to assistant manager. He also attended Blinn College. Eddie served in the US Army from 1969 – 1971 as Military Police. After spending time as a Correctional Specialist, receiving the National Defense Service Medal and the Expert Rifle Marksman Medal, he left the service as an SP4 with an Honorable Discharge from Fort Ord, CA. He was an honored and very proud Veteran.

He continued to work in Brenham and the surrounding areas in local meat markets, advancing his skills as market manager. Eddie and Mary Ellen, along with their 3 children opened Eddie’s Meat Market and BBQ in 1983. He expanded the business to include catering in 1985. Eddie was known as “the meat man.” During these years, many people stopped by to get one of their famous lunches, and “Home of the $5 lunch” became popular.

Eddie was a smart business man and knew that putting in the hard work, long hours, and keeping a close-knit knowledgeable operation would prove to be a successful family business. He made sure to instill his work ethic in each of his children.

The meat market continued to be a thriving business for 23 years. Eddie continued his love for cooking as the part-time resident chef for several years for Mike and Nina Hopkins at Mike Hopkins Distributing. Eddie was an amazing cook and loved to talk about cooking and preparing some of the best meals.

Everyone that came into contact with Eddie found out quickly that he was kind, funny, smart, quick witted, loved people and they loved him. He always had a story or joke to tell as he was out and about Brenham. He will be truly missed by everyone who knew him.

Eddie loved and cared for his family, and was a great Dad to his three children. He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who knew him as “Pa.” When you saw Eddie in town, he would always speak so proudly of them all. He was especially close to his “little sidekick,” granddaughter Katelyn Cowen.

Eddie is survived by: son Chad Hugo and wife Judi, daughter Chanda Hugo Cowen, and daughter Cacey Hugo Lorentzson; grandchildren Morgan Hugo Wintjen and husband Zach, Brittany Carter and husband Brett, Boo Burttschell, Rayne Wallace, Jett Cowen, Katelyn Cowen, Iris Lorentzson, and Iva Lorentzson; great-grandchildren Case Carter, Crue Carter, and Bennett Wintjen; brother Freddie Hugo and wife Rita; sisters Pat Lueckemeyer and husband Ronnie, Karen Hugo, and Shelia Hugo and Mark Robinson; also numerous other family members and many friends.

Eddie is preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law Liam Lorentzson.

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 20 from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., with family present from 5-7 p.m. at Brenham Memorial Chapel.
