Gary William Roberts

Gary William Roberts passed peacefully in his sleep at his home on November 13, 2021, in Brenham, Texas, and will be remembered as a gifted and generous man, who loved his family and friends dearly.

Gary was born on December 14, 1950, to Sarah C. Holle and Pierre N. Roberts, Jr., in Fort Worth, Texas. His early years were spent in Brenham, Texas, before his family moved to Houston, Texas. Gary graduated from Memorial High School in 1969. He attended and graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1973 with a BFA in theater arts. Gary then performed in many productions at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts in Santa Maria, California. Gary moved to New York City in the late seventies, and performed onstage in many productions both there and in Dallas with Dallas Shakespeare, New Arts Theater in Dallas (Dracula, Private Lives, and Lone Star/Laundry and Bourbon, among many others). At the McCarter Theater in Princeton, New Jersey, he was seen in Hamlet, The Day They Shot John Lennon, Thanksgiving, and Napoleon Nightdreams. He performed in Crimes of the Heart (Doc) and The Miss Firecracker Contest (Delmount). He also appeared on soap operas, and in 1989 was Ray in “The Face” on Monsters, although his true love was live theater. He was in The Haircut and Grover Bob Loves You. Gary was on the national tour of I’m Not Rappaport, and appeared in several productions in Seattle, Washington. Gary was an Actor’s Equity and SAG member. He was fortunate to have had enduring friendships with his SMU classmates and fellow thespians and loved reconnecting with so many of them and meeting new friends at a recent SMU reunion held in Los Angeles. He was “Gary Bob” to many and was known as well for his loyalty to the Astros, the Rockets, and the Texas A&M football team.

In 1985, he met his future wife, Sabrina Kim Soares, and they married on October 9, 1993, at the First Congregational Church in Old Lyme, Connecticut. That same year they moved to Brenham, Texas, and Gary has been involved in family business interests since then, as well as being a longtime MC for the Brenham Maifest and acting in productions at Unity Theater. You might have seen him as King Henry II in The Lion in Winter or as Sam Houston at Washington on the Brazos State Park.

Gary was predeceased by his beloved sister, Nancy Carol, his mother, Sarah Carolyn, and his father-in-law, Arthur F. Soares.

The memory of Gary’s life is cherished by his wife, Sabrina, his son, Will Tyler, his daughter, Olivia Leigh, his father, Pierre Nicholas, his aunt and uncle, Lynn and Walter “Buddy” Holle, and his brother, Donald Glenn “Donny,” his sister-in-law, Melanie, his mother-in-law, Janet Mansfield Soares, his brother-in-law, Tristan F. Soares, his nieces, Sarah Beth, Kate, Justina, and Daniella, his nephew, Broc Bosse, as well as many cousins and lifetime friends.

A private family gravesite ceremony will be held. The family would like to express its gratitude to Hospice Brazos Valley.
