Obituary

Herbert William Goessler, 90 of Brenham and the husband of Norma Jean (Kneschke) Goessler, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on January 15, 2022.

Herbert was born on February 28, 1931, in Old Washington, Texas to Charles H. and Emma (Schmidt) Goessler. He was baptized at Friedens Church of Washington.

On January 21, 1956, Herbert and Norma Jean Kneschke were married at Our Savior Lutheran Church in College Station, Texas by Rev. Thomas Swygert.

Shortly after graduating from Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan, Herbert went on to serve his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was stationed at Fort Bliss and the White Sands Missile Range in El Paso where he worked on air defense missile systems and rose to the rank of Sergeant.

Following his military service, Herbert returned to Bryan, and shortly thereafter, he met Norma Jean at a dance at Prairie Hill Hall. After they were married, the couple lived in Bryan then moved to Brenham where Herbert started his career at Blue Bell Creameries. During his time at Blue Bell, he worked on refrigeration and ice cream machinery. Throughout his years he helped the creamery expand throughout Texas and several other states. He even helped get Blue Bell delivered to his grandchildren’s school in Carrollton, Texas to have ice cream Fridays. Herbert, a well-respected employee, loved working at Blue Bell and continued to regularly visit his friends there after retiring in 1993.

Herbert was passionate about Radio Controlled model airplanes and model trains. He built and flew RC airplanes and was a member of the Das Kleine Flugzeug Klub (Brenham RC Airplane Club), where he served many roles in the organization and was recognized nationally for his service to the club. Herbert was known around the area for his Christmas trains. He took great pleasure in this Christmas display, as well as the joy it brought to everyone in the community. Herbert and Norma Jean took many trips abroad and many road trips with their children and grandchildren.

Herbert was a friend to all and will be tremendously missed.

Surviving loving family includes: Norma Jean Goessler, wife of 65 years; his sons and their wives, Mark and Laraine Goessler and Paul and Sarah Goessler; grandchildren Andrew and his wife Sarah Goessler, Alexander Goessler, Maggie Goessler, Maggi and her husband Tyler Kibbee, and Molli Rau; great-grandchildren Matthew and Elliot Goessler; sister Laverne Battley; sister-in-law Doris Blum; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be Tuesday, January 18 from noon until 8 p.m. at Brenham Memorial Chapel. A private funeral service will be held for the family at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, and a memorial service and celebration of Herbert’s life will be announced and held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Christian Day School.
