Obituary

Lee Roy Gaskamp, Jr., 69, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday September 6th, 2021, while in the presence of his children and holding his wife’s hand, after an exhausting battle with COVID-19.

Anyone who knew Lee, knew that he was the most loving father and husband anyone could ask for. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world. He is survived by the love of his life, Sue (wife of 42 years) and his children: Russell, Catherine, Sam and Holly.

Lee was larger than life and a beloved member of this community. He was born in Brenham on October 15th, 1951 to Lee Roy Sr and Lillie Mae Hohlt Gaskamp. He graduated from Sealy High School in 1970. He then attended Blinn College on a band scholarship and finished his degree at the University of Texas in Austin (hook em’). He used his charisma and education to start a community bank (The Bank of Brenham) and was involved in many, many civic and charitable organizations. He was a member of Brenham Bible Church.

When Lee wasn’t doting on his wife, he was often found jesting with his rival Aggie buddies about college football, playing 18 holes of golf at the Brenham Country Club (shooting his age at least twice) or working on early drafts of his famous Christmas letter.

He felt privileged to stay close to his extended family. Taking the time to ‘check in’ with his little sister Donna and her husband Robert Emshoff. Driving out to the country to visit with his older sister Carol and husband James Lee Wenzel. Taking pottery classes with Sue’s younger sister Jane and husband Bernie Cox and playing 42 (dominos) with Sue’s older sister Doreen and husband Steve (“Uncle Bob”) Williams. He never tired of passing on his ‘infinite wisdoms’ to all the nieces and nephews.

Lee loved the people of his community and had more friends than anyone could name. Jack Ancone, Fred Dahmann, Joey Gregg, Gregg Jones, Bill Nutt, Richard O’Malley, and Gary Sonnenburg have been asked to be his Honorary Pallbearers and help carry him into his next life.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (http://www.naaf.org), Lee’s favorite non-profit in support of his daughter, Catherine.

To honor Lee, the family has arranged for a public visitation to be held at Brenham Memorial Chapel (2300 Stringer Street) on Friday September 10th from 7am to 7pm. Along with wearing masks, they are encouraging everyone to write a story or favorite memory and bring any photos they have of Lee to leave in remembrance and celebrate the life of this man the community holds so dear. He will be greatly missed and always remembered for his humor and kindness.
