Obituary

Marie Dolores “Matka” Snow was born August 20, 1934 in Brenham, Texas to John and Victoria (Januchowski) Jozwiak. She was baptized and educated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church/School. She remained a parishioner her entire life. She departed this world on October 23, 2021 at St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan.

In 1954 she married Billy Balcerek, moved to Houston and worked for Maryland Club Coffee Company. Marie had four children over the years. In 1972 they returned to Brenham to raise their children.

Later, she married Thomas Snow in 1977 and stayed devoted to their love til the end. She and Thomas spent many joyful years with annual Mother’s Day camp outs at Pecan Lake in Somerville and many trips to San Leon Pass. She loved crappie fishing with brothers Ben and PJ and sister-in-law Fay. It was always a competition with them...first fish...biggest fish...most fish...finishing each outing with a cold beer or two while the crappie were frying. Marie competed in numerous fishing tournaments around Texas. Eventually, the Snows purchased a cabin at Somerville Place and had their own little piece of heaven there.....fishing in the morning and dancing at night. Oh how she loved to dance and was a huge Dallas Cowboys fan.

Marie had so many passions in her life. She loved softball and pitched for her teams well into her mid 50’s. Horseshoes was another sport she excelled at winning. Numerous times she won the Washington County Fair tournament and represented it at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (one time bringing home second place). Bowling, yet another talent she possessed. Her shelves of trophies from the aforementioned sports filled a room in her home.

Her love of playing pitch was passed down to her children where they all had turns winning tourneys with her. The card table was always occupied at family gatherings. She enjoyed bingo and the occasional trip “East” with her sisters and children and sometimes saw her favorite singer George Jones in concert.

She made numerous friends tending to customers at Robert’s Service Station, K&M Grocery, Short Branch and Welcome Store before retiring.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Joe, Bernard (Ben), Charles (Kite), Patrick (PJ), baby John; and sister Dorothy.

She is survived by daughters: Linda Bernick (husband James), Sandra Balcerek, Vicky Balcerek (Scott Flannigan); son: Michael Balcerek; grandchildren: Marie Bernick (Erich Robinson), Jessica Wehring (John Gajeske) and Michael Bernick (wife Kim); great-grandchildren: Jaden Mertz, Korbin Mertz and James Bernick III; sisters: Florence Kasowski and Janet Wier; numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.
