Obituary

William Paul Phillips, 91, of Brenham, Texas passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at Scott & White Regional Hospital in Brenham Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m. Sunday, October 25, 2015 with a Rosary service at 7:00 p.m. at Brenham Memorial Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am, Monday October 26, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brenham with Father Thaddeus Tabak. A celebration of life reception will be held at St. Mary’s immediately following Mass. Interment and graveside services will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Plantersville on FM 1774.

Serving as pallbearers are Christian McIntyre, John McIntyre, Ryan Phillips, Frank Ashley IV, Michael Reid, Adrian “AJ” Johnston, Gary Phillips and Troy Phillips.

Bill was born in Plantersville to John and Pearl Phillips on October 27, 1923. Bill was one of six brothers born into the Phillips farming and ranching family. Bill was the twin brother of Henry Phillips. Bill was married on April 29, 1950 to Helen Kowis at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Anderson. Together, Helen and Bill raised six children and resided in Brenham since 1968. Bill retired from Lone Star Distributing after 35 years of service in Sales. During his tenure at Lone Star, Bill worked Sales territories in Houston, Odessa, San Antonio and Brenham. Additionally, Bill worked for Phillips Painting of Brenham for 10 years.

Bill was part of the greatest generation, a WWII veteran, serving under General George Patton during the Battle of Bulge campaign. He was awarded a purple heart for wounds received. Bill was a supporter of many causes and efforts. He was a devout Catholic and member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus in Brenham. Bill loved his family. With his family, he also enjoyed a good cigar, Aggie football, cooking, a spirited domino game, a well-kept yard, fishing, party of any kind and golf trips to El Paso.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Helen and granddaughter Allie Phillips.

Survivors includes, son William Phillips, Jr. of Brenham, sons and daughters-in-law Ronnie and Kay Phillips of Brenham, Kenneth and Lete Phillips of Brenham, Alan and Dianne Phillips of College Station, daughters and sons-in-law Janice and Frank Ashley of College Station and Suzanne and Patrick McIntyre of Bryan. Bill was also survived by his brother and sister-in-law Daniel and Ruth Phillips of Tennessee, one brother-in-law, George Kowis of Ohio, and one sister-in-law Cecilia Lapaglia of Hurst; 12 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family respectfully requests memorials in lieu of flowers be made to Catholic Charities of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Brenham.
