Obituary

Dr. Lowell Smith Herzog, 78 of Brenham, passed away Friday, April 10, 2009.

He was born December 12, 1930 in Brenham, son of Willie C. and Meta (Schmitt) Herzog. On March 25, 1931 he was baptized by Pastor Arthur Hartmann and confirmed March 25, 1945 by Pastor Theo Streng, both at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Brenham. Dr. Herzog attended Brenham public schools, Alamo School, Central School and was a 1949 graduate of Brenham High School. He was also a graduate of Blinn College and the University of Houston. He was the first student accepted into the University of Houston College of Optometry and a member of its first graduating class in 1955.

Dr. Herzog practiced Optometry in Brenham for 35 years. He was a member of the American Optometric Association and the Texas Optometric Society. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, having served on the church council and various church committees. He was also a member of S.PJ.S.T. Bluebonnet Lodge 169 and Sons of Herman.

He was preceded in death by parents and brother-in-law Roland Ludtke.

He is survived by: son, Lowell Smith Herzog, Jr. of Brenham; twin sister, Joyce Herzog Ludtke of Austin; niece, Lori Ludtke Ashcraft and husband Louis of Austin; and numerous cousins.

Visitation will be Monday, April 13th from 5-7 p.m. in Brenham Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 14th at 10 a.m. in St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastors Lawrence Bade and Phil Fenton officiating. Interment will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Harvey Loesch, Gus Mutscher, Walter Rodenbeck, Eugene Nowak, Donald Becker, Dr. Rick Barganier, Wilbert Meier and Luther Schwettmann. Honorary pallbearers will be Earl Nitsch, George Burch, Otto Wehring, Jr., Curtis Reeves, Dr. Peter Amaral, Henry Al Ellermann, Alvin Neumann and John Garnett.

Memorials may be given to your charity of choice.
