Obituary

George Dilley Broyles, Jr. M.D. was born at home in Palestine, TX on October 11, 1915 to Lucille Neville Broyles and G. Dilley Broyles. He spent his boyhood in Palestine, where he graduated from high school in 1932. Dr. Broyles attended Schreiner Military Institute and graduated from the University of Texas, Austin. He received his medical education at UTMB, Galveston, graduating in 1940. While fulfilling his residency at Protestant Episcopal Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, he was called to active duty by the U.S. Navy having volunteered for medical service.

Dr. Broyles served as Medical Officer aboard the USS Stack, DD 406 in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of WW II. His fellow crew members became life long friends. In spite of the severity of the war, he held many fond memories of those days and those comrades. During a deep fog, the Stack survived a collision at sea with the U.S. Aircraft Carrier, The Wasp. That experience further solidified the bonds of friendship among crew members. From the USS Stack he was assigned to the Surgical Department, U.S. Naval Hospital, San Diego, CA. He then served two years as Executive Officer of the First Marine Division Hospital, Tientsin, China. He returned from China to the Naval Hospital, Houston (now the Veterans Hospital) where he served until his discharge from the service. Dr. Broyles was privileged to have additional post-graduate training under a surgical fellowship in the office of Dr. George Waldron, a pre-eminent surgeon in Houston at that time. In 1950 he began his private practice in Houston.

Dr. Broyles was certified by the American Board of Surgery. He was a clinical Professor of Surgery at UTMB, Houston, a medical consultant for WKM Valve Manufacturing Company, a member of The American College of Surgeons, and the Texas Surgical Society. He was Team Doctor for over 25 years at St. John’s School, Houston, where he attended all sporting events that required the presence of a physician, again gaining life long friends among the faculty and students. He took great pride in his long association with the school that developed out of a chance meeting with Alan Lake Chidsey, founding Headmaster. He was an avid racing sailor, participating, winning, and placing in many races in the Thistle Class. Dr. Broyles made many ocean cruises to Bermuda and to Vera Cruz, Mexico which qualified him for membership in The Ocean Cruising Club. He was a member of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church for many years serving on the vestry there. Later, he joined St. James the Fisherman Episcopal Church, West Galveston Island, TX. Calvary Episcopal Church, Richmond, TX and most recently he was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Brenham, TX.
