Obituary
George Robertson Moorman went to be with the Lord on July 22, 2011 in Brenham, Texas. He was born November 17, 1919 in Fort Worth and grew up in Dallas. Mr. Moorman was a graduate of Southern Methodist University (B.B.A, 1939; J.D., 1941). After law school, he went to Washington, D.C. to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He was appointed special agent before the attack on Pearl Harbor, but was ordered to active duty January 21, 1942 with the United States Navy. He served on sea duty in the Navy for four years. During that time Mr. Moorman commanded the USS AVP9, fleet Seaplane Tender. George remained active in the Naval reserve, commanded a NR Surface Division, and obtained an Armed Forces Training Center in Waco. He was promoted to, and retired as, a Captain of the United States Navy. Mr. Moorman founded the Naval Reserve Association and served as State President of the Texas Department President Reserve Officers Association. After World War II, Mr. Moorman worked as an attorney with the Veteran’s Administration and continued the private practice of law in Brenham where he established the law firm of Moorman, Tate, Urquhart, Haley, Upchurch & Yates, L.L.P. During his career, Mr. Moorman was an AV-rated attorney. He was the founder and chairman of the successful South Central Savings Association (now Capital One). Mr. Moorman founded Washington County Abstract Company and served as the attorney and a Director Emeritus of Citizens State Bank, Somerville, Texas. He was a member of, and served as Chairman of Deacons of, the First Baptist Church of Brenham. After his retirement from actively practicing law, he and his wife, Billie, moved to Horseshoe Bay. For ten years, Mr. Moorman was a mediator/arbitrator for the 33rd District Court in Blanco, Burnet, Llano, Mason and San Saba Counties and was a member of the American Arbitration Association. After moving to Sun City, Texas, at Georgetown, he fully retired in 1998. In 1998, he and Billie founded The Worship Place (Interdenominational) and Mr. Moorman served as Trustee Chair until January, 2005. The Church built a new sanctuary at 811 Sun City Boulevard and has over 700 members.
Mr. Moorman is survived by his wife of 64 years, Billie Scoggin Moorman; two sons, Robert L. Moorman and R. Hal Moorman; daughters-in-law, Rebecca Moorman and Lucy Moorman; nine grandchildren, Dr. Ted Moorman and wife Sara, Lydia Moorman Hattrup and husband Ed Hattrup, Jason Moorman, Peter Moorman, Ben Moorman, Kate Moorman, William Moorman, Bethany Moorman, and John Moorman; two great grandchildren, Evelynn and Della Moorman. His parents, R.H. and Della C. Moorman, brothers, Jack D. Moorman and Dr. R. Hal Moorman, Jr., and sister, Katharine Connell, preceded him in death.
Visitation with the Moorman family will be Tuesday, July 26 from 5-7 p.m. in Brenham Memorial Chapel.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 27 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Brenham.
