Obituary

Milly Schaer, age 99 of Chappell Hill, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2021.

Milly Ann England was born October 21, 1921 in Lufkin, Texas to parents Henry C. and Charlotte “Lottie” Moore England. Her father worked in the oil business and the family moved to Brenham. Milly was a graduate of Brenham High School. She worked in College Station for the U.S. Army during WWII, while her future husband attended Texas A&M University and served in the Army after graduation. On June 14, 1945 she married the love of her life, John “Bo” Schaer in Chappell Hill.

Milly was always involved in her Chappell Hill community. In her life, she expressed Southern hospitality, warmth and charm. She owned Schaer Shoppe Antiques in downtown Chappell Hill and was an antique dealer and appraiser, with many of her antique finds gracing homes throughout Texas and the United States. Milly pursued historical research with great attention to documentation and was instrumental in placement of Texas historical markers. Her most recent achievement, with her dear friend and co-author Sarah Brown, was the 2016 placement of a marker for the town of Cedar Creek. She was a co-founder of the Chappell Hill Historical Society and Museum where she developed permanent and temporary exhibits and was instrumental in revitalizing the Chappell Hill Circulating Library.

She was an honorary member of the Red Hat Society “Red Hatters” in Chappell Hill. Milly was a devoted member, enthusiastically involved in the servant mission and activities of Chappell Hill United Methodist Church. She especially enjoyed her years as a Sunday School teacher. In her spare time, she loved feeding and watching birds, enjoyed recounting the antics of deer in her backyard and tending a seasonally appropriate collection of colorful flowers and herbs.

Milly was a much cherished wife, mother, mother-in-love, Gramma and Granny, G.G. Milly, sister, aunt, cousin and friend.

Preceding her in death are her: husband Bo; parents; son William E. Schaer; siblings and their spouses, H.C. Jr. “Buddy” and Helen Guy England, Ruth and Clark Rennels, Gayle and Virginia Whiddon, Joe and Rosemary Cole and dear friend Sarah Brown.

Surviving family includes: son and daughters-in-love, John Jr. and Dottie Schaer of Brenham, Joyce Schaer of Bryan; grandchildren, John Schaer III and wife Jenny of Brenham, Jason Schaer and Michael Schaer of Bryan; great-grandchildren, John B. “J.B.” Schaer, IV and Audrey Schaer, numerous nieces and nephews and her lovingly kind family of caregivers : Rosia Newsome, Sherry Maxie, Mattie Houston, Gloria Wallace, and April Majewski, R.N.


Visitation will be Tuesday, April 27th from noon until 7 p.m. at Brenham Memorial Chapel.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, April 28th at 10 a.m. at the Masonic Cemetery, Chappell Hill. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Chappell Hill United Methodist Church with Pastor Danny Danheim officiating.

Pallbearers will be Jason Schaer, John Schaer III, Michael Schaer, Pat Cole, Hardy England, Carlos Hendrick and Brant Maxie, Jr.. Honorary pallbearers will be John Durrenberger, Darrell Fogerty, Rodney Hannath, Joel Romo and John Wick.
