Obituary

Paul J. Van Horn, age 100, of Brenham, Texas passed away Saturday, January 14, 2006 in Kruse Memorial Lutheran Village.

He was born December 15, 1905 in Canton, Kansas to John Herbert and Emma (Eichelberger) Van Horn. Mr. Van Horn was a graduate of Kansas State Teachers’ College of Pittsburg, Kansas and received a Master’s Degree from Colorado State University of Ft. Collins, Colorado. On August 5, 1935 he married Gladys Brubaker in Fort Collins. He taught at Central and Will Rogers High Schools in Tulsa, Oklahoma until1946. He then became professor and head of the Industrial Arts Department of the University of Southwest Louisiana (now University of Louisiana Lafayette) in Lafayette, Louisiana. He retired from USL in 1973. Mr. and Mrs. Van Horn relocated to Bellville, Texas in 1989. After his wife’s death in 2001, Mr. Van Horn moved to Kruse Village and was the first resident of LaRoche Manor at Kruse Village.

His loving family includes: son, Lloyd Van Horn and wife Betty of Bellville; grandchildren, Sharon and Keith Ridgway of Chappell Hill and Beth and Sid Smith of Cypress; great-grandchildren, Stephen Ridgway, Rachael Smith and Michael Smith.

His wife Gladys preceded him in death June 2001. He was the last surviving member of his family of five brothers, three sisters and their spouses. His death is truly the passing of an era.

The Van Horn family will receive friends Monday, January 16, 2006 from 7 – 8 p.m. in Brenham Memorial Chapel.

There will be a graveside service for the family Tuesday, January 17, 2006 in United Methodist Cemetery, Industry, Texas. A memorial service for Kruse residents will be held Thursday, January 19, 2006 in the Kruse Village chapel at 3 p.m. with Rev. Teresa Davis. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 21, 2006 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Kim Little-Brooks officiating.
