Obituary

Virginia Elizabeth Jago Elder died peacefully at her Wunder Hill Ranch in Chappell Hill, Texas, on Wednesday, November 21, 2018. She was born in London, England to Olwen Davies Jago and Arthur Jago. After her arrival in America at age six, Virginia attended the Kinkaid School in Houston, graduated from St. Mary’s Hall in San Antonio, and studied at Sweet Briar College in Virginia. She loved all sports, especially enjoying tennis and golf throughout her life. Virginia was also an avid rider who bred and raced thoroughbred horses in several states, including Kentucky, Texas, Louisiana, and Indiana. She spent many happy hours in Estes Park, Colorado, and Chappell Hill, Texas. She was a member of the Assembly, Bayou Club, Bolero, Brenham Country Club, Garden Club of Houston, Houston Country Club, Town and Country Garden Club, and Washington County Riding Club.

Virginia was predeceased by her parents, her husband John William Elder, and her son Charles (Nick) Jago Elder. She is survived her nieces and nephews Laura Neuhaus Pew, Joe Neuhaus, Jr., Margaret Neuhaus Weekley and Charles Neuhaus; many friends, especially Burena Brown, Holly Carlile, and Rafael Beltran; and by godchildren Lisa Haemisegger Allis, Mary Neuhaus Fleming, Kathryn Thobae Hodge, and Douglas Zwiener.

A private interment will take place in Chappell Hill on December 15. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to Animal Friends of Washington Co., 3901 Hwy 36 N, Brenham, TX 77833; Houston Audubon Society, 440 Wilchester, Houston, TX 77079; or the charity of your choice.
